Obligation and practice

Why maintenance is not optional

Maintaining wind turbines serves not only the safety and efficiency of the installations – it is also mandatory. Legislators, insurers and the employers' liability insurance associations require recurring inspections of wind turbines.

Experts must inspect the machine, rotor blades and tower at regular intervals. The intervals follow from the expert opinions for the individual turbine and amount to a maximum of two years; in exceptional cases they can be extended to four years.

Service work on a wind turbine

Inspection intervals by rated power

The inspection cycle depends on the rated power of the wind turbine.

Rated power of the turbineInspection interval
Turbines below 300 kWevery 4 years
Turbines from 300 kW up to 1,500 kWevery 2 years
Turbines of 1,500 kW and aboveannually

The exact intervals result from the expert opinions issued for the individual turbine.

Further mandatory inspections

In addition to the turbine inspection, insurers and the employers' liability insurance association require further recurring checks.

InspectionInterval
Lightning protection testingevery 2 years
Fire extinguisher servicingat least every 2 years
Inspection of climbing laddersannually
Inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE)annually

Even though most maintenance and service technicians bring their own harnesses and fall-arrest equipment, the approval requirements for wind turbines stipulate that a certain amount of personal protective equipment must be available on site for emergencies.
